Redness
& Rosacea

Persistent facial redness, visible blood vessels, and rosacea flares don't have to be permanent. The right combination of professional treatments and medical management can dramatically calm the skin.

Understanding the Concern

Rosacea is a chronic skin condition that can be managed effectively

Rosacea affects over 16 million Americans and is frequently undertreated because many patients assume chronic redness is just "sensitive skin." With the right approach, significant and lasting improvement is achievable.

Rosacea is characterized by facial redness, visible blood vessels (telangiectasia), and in some cases inflammatory papules and pustules. It tends to be progressive without treatment, making early management important.

Triggers vary by individual but commonly include sun exposure, heat, alcohol, spicy foods, and certain skincare ingredients. Managing triggers alongside professional treatments produces the best long-term results.

Erythematotelangiectatic Rosacea (ETR)
The most common subtype, persistent redness, flushing, and visible blood vessels (broken capillaries) across the nose and cheeks. Responds well to vascular laser and intense pulsed light (IPL) treatments.
Papulopustular Rosacea
Resembles acne but is distinct, inflammatory red bumps and pus-filled pustules appear alongside redness. Often responds to prescription topicals (metronidazole, azelaic acid) combined with professional treatments.
Phymatous Rosacea
Skin thickening, particularly of the nose (rhinophyma). Less common but more pronounced, requires more intensive laser or energy-based treatment. More common in men.
Recommended Treatments

How we treat redness & rosacea

We've organized recommendations by priority, what we most commonly suggest first, and what we layer in for enhanced results.

First Line Most commonly recommended for this concern
Vascular Laser / IPL

Vascular Laser / IPL

Best for: visible blood vessels, persistent redness

Laser and intense pulsed light (IPL) target the hemoglobin in dilated blood vessels, heating and collapsing them without damaging surrounding tissue. This is the most effective treatment for visible capillaries and diffuse facial redness. Multiple sessions are typically needed.

Prescription Topicals

Prescription Topicals

Best for: inflammatory papules, reducing flares

Prescription metronidazole, azelaic acid, and ivermectin cream are first-line medical treatments for inflammatory rosacea. Our physician prescribes and supervises topical regimens that reduce the frequency and severity of flares.

Rosacea-Safe Medical Skincare

Best for: daily management and skin barrier support

Common Questions

Rosacea & facial redness FAQ

Rosacea is a chronic condition, the underlying tendency doesn't go away. However, with the right combination of treatments and trigger management, many patients achieve skin that is clear and calm the vast majority of the time. Think of it as managed rather than cured, similar to conditions like eczema or psoriasis.
Rosacea-prone skin requires careful treatment selection and technique. We use devices and settings appropriate for reactive skin, not aggressive protocols that risk flaring. The laser or IPL sensation is typically described as a rubber band snap; most patients tolerate it well with topical numbing cream if needed.
Most patients need 2–4 IPL or vascular laser sessions for significant clearing of visible capillaries. Sessions are typically 4 weeks apart. Individual results vary by the density and caliber of the vessels. Some patients need only 1–2 treatments for light capillaries; others with denser networks need more.
Most patients can return to gentle mineral makeup within 24–48 hours after IPL or vascular laser. We recommend avoiding anything fragranced or potentially irritating for the first 48 hours. Your provider will give you specific post-care instructions.
Treated blood vessels do not re-form, but new ones can develop with ongoing sun exposure and aging. Maintenance sessions once or twice a year, combined with daily SPF, extend results significantly. Some patients go years between maintenance sessions.
