Laser hair removal uses targeted light energy absorbed by the melanin in the hair shaft to heat and permanently disable the follicle, without affecting the surrounding skin. Electrolysis is the only hair removal method with FDA approval for permanent removal. A fine, sterile probe is inserted into the hair follicle, and a precise electrical current is delivered to permanently destroy the follicle's ability to produce hair. Unlike laser, electrolysis works on every hair color, including light blonde, gray, and red hair that contains too little melanin for laser to target effectively.
Many patients use a combination approach: laser for larger areas with dark hair, and electrolysis for fine facial hair or any remaining light or gray hairs after a laser series. Our providers will help you determine the most efficient strategy for your goals.
