About This Treatment

What Botox actually does, and what it doesn't

Botox (onabotulinumtoxinA) and Xeomin (incobotulinumtoxinA) are neurotoxin injectables that temporarily relax the facial muscles responsible for expression-related wrinkles.

When you squint, frown, or raise your eyebrows, specific muscles contract and create lines in the overlying skin. Over years of repetition, these lines become permanent, visible even at rest. Botox intercepts the signal between the nerve and the muscle, allowing the skin to smooth out and preventing the further deepening of those lines.

Botox does not freeze your face, erase all expression, or treat wrinkles caused by volume loss or gravity, those require different tools. At Florida Aesthetics, we're precise about what Botox will and won't accomplish for your specific anatomy. You'll leave knowing exactly what to expect.

Treatment areas

  • Forehead horizontal lines
  • Glabellar lines (11s / frown lines)
  • Crow's feet (eye corners)
  • Brow lift
  • Bunny lines (nose)
  • Lip lines & lip flip
  • Chin dimpling (mentalis)
  • Neck bands (Nefertiti lift)
  • TMJ / jaw slimming (masseter)
  • Hyperhidrosis (underarm sweating)

Botox vs. Xeomin: Both are neurotoxins with similar mechanisms and results. Xeomin is a "naked" neurotoxin with no accessory proteins, which may be preferable for patients who have developed resistance to Botox over time. We'll discuss which is appropriate for you at your consultation.

What to Expect

Your Botox appointment, step by step

1
Consultation & mapping (5–10 min)
Your provider evaluates your muscle movement, skin quality, and goals. We map injection points and discuss exact unit placement. You'll see our plan before any needle is picked up.
2
Treatment (10–20 min)
Neurotoxin is injected using ultra-fine needles at precise muscle points. Most patients describe a mild pinching sensation. No numbing cream is typically needed, though it's available on request.
3
Post-care instructions (5 min)
Your injector will discuss your aftercare in detail: no lying down for 4 hours, avoid rubbing the treated area for 24 hours, skip vigorous exercise the day of. You can return to work or social plans immediately.
4
2-week follow-up (optional)
Your injector would like to see you two weeks after treatment to make sure the treatment is working as planned and whether you need additional units.

Common Questions

Botox FAQ

Minimally. Botox is administered with very fine gauge needles and most patients describe a brief pinching or stinging sensation at each injection site. The forehead and crow's feet are typically the least sensitive areas; the glabellar region (11s) is slightly more so. Treatment is complete in 10 to 20 minutes. Numbing cream or cold compresses are available on request for patients who are particularly sensitive to needles.
Initial results typically appear within 3 to 5 days as the muscle begins to relax. The full effect is visible at 10 to 14 days, which is why we schedule your complimentary follow-up at the two week mark. Duration averages 3 to 4 months, though many long term patients find results extend to 4 to 5 months over time as the muscle gradually weakens with consistent treatment. Factors that affect longevity include your individual metabolism, activity level, and the specific area treated.
The number of units depends on your anatomy, muscle strength, and goals. Common reference ranges include: Forehead: 10 to 20 units · Glabellar (11s): 20 to 30 units · Crow's feet: 10 to 15 units per side. A full upper face treatment typically uses 40 to 60 units. First time patients often receive conservative dosing to ensure natural movement. Your provider will explain exactly what they are recommending and why. We believe in transparency, so you will always know your exact unit count rather than being quoted a flat price per area.
Botox has been FDA approved for cosmetic use since 2002 and has one of the most extensive safety records in aesthetics. Common and temporary side effects include mild redness, swelling, or bruising at the injection sites. Rare side effects include temporary asymmetry, headache, or in cases of poor placement, temporary eyelid drooping (ptosis). This is why provider skill and anatomical knowledge are vital. At Florida Aesthetics, all injections are performed by trained, experienced providers.
Botox relaxes muscles to address "dynamic" wrinkles caused by movement, such as forehead lines and crow's feet. Dermal fillers add volume to areas that have lost tissue due to aging, such as the cheeks, lips, and under eye hollows. The two are often used together for a "liquid facelift" effect because they address different aspects of facial aging. Your provider will recommend the combination that is appropriate for your anatomy.
Your face simply returns to its pre-treatment baseline as the effect wears off and muscle movement resumes. Botox does not cause additional wrinkles or stretch your skin. Many patients find that after years of consistent treatment, their wrinkles have actually improved even if they stop, because the skin was protected from repetitive folding for a long period.
At Florida Aesthetics and Wellness, we price by the unit so you only pay for exactly what you need. While total costs vary based on your unique goals and muscle strength, a typical treatment session for one or more areas generally ranges from $250 to $800. We will provide a precise quote during your complimentary consultation. We also offer various neurotoxin brands, such as Xeomin, to fit different preferences and budgets.
Most healthy adults 18 and older with dynamic wrinkles are good candidates. Botox works best on lines that appear when you move your face, such as when you squint or frown. It is not the primary treatment for wrinkles caused by severe skin laxity or sun damage. Botox is contraindicated if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, have a known hypersensitivity to botulinum toxin, or have certain neuromuscular disorders.
Yes. Beyond cosmetic use, we offer Botox for two highly effective medical applications. First, masseter treatments reduce teeth grinding (bruxism) and jaw tension while subtly slimming the lower face. Second, hyperhidrosis treatments for underarm sweating block the nerves that activate sweat glands, typically providing 6 to 12 months of significant relief. Both are well established uses with strong clinical evidence.
An unnatural look usually comes from over-treatment or improper placement that does not account for your unique anatomy. We start conservatively, especially with new patients, and map injections based on your specific muscle patterns. Our included two week follow-up ensures we can make small adjustments if needed to achieve a refreshed, well-rested look that maintains your natural expression.
