Kybella (deoxycholic acid) is an FDA-approved injectable that permanently destroys fat cells beneath the chin. Once destroyed, those cells cannot accumulate or store fat again.

Deoxycholic acid is a naturally occurring bile acid your body uses to digest dietary fat. When injected into submental fat (the fat pad under the chin), it disrupts fat cell membranes, causing permanent cell destruction. Your body then clears the cellular debris over the following weeks.

What to Expect

What happens during a Kybella appointment?

Marking & numbing (15 min)
Your provider marks the treatment grid on the submental area and applies a topical numbing agent. Ice packs are also used to reduce discomfort. The injection site is thoroughly cleansed.

Injections (15–20 min)
Kybella is injected in a grid pattern across the submental fat. Each session may involve 20–50 injections depending on the area size. Most patients describe a burning or stinging sensation that peaks during injection and fades within minutes.

Post-treatment monitoring (10 min)
You'll sit for a brief observation period. Ice is applied to reduce immediate swelling. You'll receive detailed aftercare instructions: expect significant swelling for 5–7 days (this is normal and expected, it is evidence the treatment is working), possible bruising, and temporary numbness.

Follow-up & next session (6 weeks)

Swelling is the most significant side effect and is expected, it's actually evidence the treatment is working. Initial swelling peaks at 24–48 hours and substantially resolves by 7–10 days. Some residual firmness or mild swelling can persist for up to 4 weeks. We recommend scheduling Kybella sessions well before any important events.
Yes. Once fat cells are destroyed, they cannot regenerate. The cells are permanently eliminated. However, if you gain significant weight after treatment, remaining fat cells in the area can still enlarge. Kybella results are best maintained with a stable weight.
