About This Treatment

What is Moxi laser and who is it best for?

Moxi is a non-ablative 1927nm thulium laser that treats the dermis without disrupting the skin's surface, delivering steady improvement in tone, pigmentation, and collagen with minimal downtime and excellent tolerability across all skin types.

Moxi is often described as the "gateway" laser, appropriate for patients who have never done laser before, those maintaining results between Halo sessions, younger patients starting preventive skin care, and darker skin types who can't safely undergo more aggressive resurfacing.

Unlike Halo's dramatic before/after, Moxi works cumulatively. A series of 3–4 sessions produces significant improvement in sun damage and skin quality, with each session building on the last. The social downtime (2–4 days of bronzing and mild peeling) fits most patients' lifestyles easily.

Moxi Laser treatment experience
What to Expect

What happens during a Moxi appointment?

1
Pre-treatment prep (15–20 min)
Skin is thoroughly cleansed. Topical numbing is optional, many patients skip it for Moxi as the treatment is well-tolerated without it. A cooling fan or chilled tip provides additional comfort during treatment.
2
Laser treatment (20–30 min)
The Moxi handpiece is passed across the skin in multiple sweeps, delivering 1927nm energy in a fractional pattern. Patients feel warmth and mild prickling. Intensity can be adjusted in real time. The treatment feels more comfortable than Halo and significantly less intense than CO2 resurfacing.
3
Immediate post (10 min)
Skin will appear pink/red for 1–2 hours after treatment. A gentle serum and mineral SPF are applied before you leave. You can return to work and most activities the same day, though skin may feel sensitive.
4
Days 2–4: MENDS shed (at home)
Within 24–48 hours, small bronzed "coffee ground" particles (MENDS) appear on the skin surface. Do not pick or wash aggressively, these naturally slough off by day 3–4. On day 4–5 skin looks refreshed and clearer. Follow-up for your next session is scheduled 4–6 weeks out.

Common Questions

Moxi, Frequently Asked Questions

Moxi is a purely non-ablative laser with 2–4 days of downtime, appropriate for all skin types and all ages as a maintenance treatment. Halo combines ablative and non-ablative wavelengths for more dramatic resurfacing, with 5–7 days of downtime. Think of Moxi as the annual tune-up and Halo as the full renovation. Many patients use Moxi 1–2x per year and do a Halo every 2–3 years.
Patients typically notice improvement after a single session, but the recommended series of 3–4 sessions achieves the most comprehensive and lasting results. Sessions are spaced 4–6 weeks apart. Improvements continue for 2–3 months after the final session as collagen remodels.
Yes, Moxi is one of the most versatile lasers for treating Fitzpatrick skin types IV–VI. Its non-ablative nature significantly reduces the risk of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation compared to ablative lasers. We still perform a thorough Fitzpatrick assessment and may recommend a prep protocol for darker skin types before beginning.
Day 1: Slightly pink, warm skin. Days 2–4: Small bronzed MENDS appear (similar to fine coffee grounds on the skin surface), this is normal and indicates the treatment is working. Do not pick. Days 4–5: MENDS shed naturally, revealing cleaner, smoother skin. Most patients can work through the week with mineral makeup starting day 2.
Yes, Moxi combines excellently with BBL (done in the same session for pigment + vascular + collagen in one visit) and with injectables (Botox and fillers at least 2 weeks after laser). We also pair Moxi with medical-grade skincare protocols (ZO Skin Health, SkinMedica) for synergistic results between sessions.
For active correction, 3–4 sessions spaced 4–6 weeks apart is the standard protocol. For maintenance after completing a series, one session every 6–12 months keeps your results. Some patients prefer quarterly Moxi "facials" as part of their skin health regimen.
