About This Treatment

How does microneedling improve skin texture and scars?

Microneedling creates thousands of controlled micro-channels in the dermis, triggering the skin's natural wound-healing response, releasing growth factors, stimulating fibroblasts, and producing new collagen and elastin.

Unlike lasers that remove tissue with heat, microneedling relies entirely on mechanical stimulation of the skin's repair cascade. This makes it exceptionally safe across all skin types, including darker Fitzpatrick types where laser-related pigmentation risk limits options.

At Florida Aesthetics, we use the medical-grade SkinPen device, the first FDA-cleared microneedling device, for precise, consistent results across all skin types and concerns.

Microneedling treatment experience
What to Expect

What happens during a Microneedling appointment?

1
Consultation & numbing (30–45 min)
After your pre-treatment assessment, prescription-strength numbing cream is applied to the full treatment area for 30–45 minutes. Adequate numbing is essential for patient comfort during microneedling, we never rush this step. If PRP is being used, blood is drawn during the numbing period.
2
Treatment (20–30 min)
The SkinPen device is moved systematically across your skin in multiple passes. Needle depth is adjusted per zone, deeper (1.5–2.5mm) for areas with acne scars or thick skin; shallower (0.5–1.0mm) for delicate areas. You'll feel vibration and pressure, well-numbed patients typically find this comfortable.
3
Growth factor or PRP application (5 min)
Immediately after microneedling, the skin is highly permeable, the micro-channels created by the needles allow topical active ingredients to penetrate far more deeply than normal. Growth factor serum (or your own PRP, if selected) is applied to maximize healing and results.
4
Healing: days 1–5
Day 1: Red, warm, slightly swollen (like a moderate sunburn). Days 2–3: Skin appears dry and textured, similar to a light peel. Days 3–5: Gentle peeling and progressive resolution. By day 5, most patients are comfortable returning to social activities. Improvements become visible at 2–4 weeks as collagen forms.

Common Questions

Microneedling, Frequently Asked Questions

A series of 3 sessions spaced 4 weeks apart is the standard protocol for meaningful collagen remodeling. Single sessions provide noticeable improvement but don't achieve the cumulative collagen response that a series does. For deeper acne scars, 4–6 sessions may be recommended to achieve optimal collagen remodeling.
Yes, microneedling is one of the safest collagen-stimulating treatments for Fitzpatrick types IV–VI because it uses no heat or light energy. The mechanical action doesn't trigger post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation the way lasers can. This makes it a first-line choice for darker skin patients seeking collagen induction for scars and texture.
Initial improvement in texture is often visible 2–3 weeks after the first session. Significant collagen remodeling builds over 3–6 months after your final session in the series. Results continue to improve for up to 6 months after the last treatment. Your collagen reaches peak improvement well after treatment has concluded.
Yes, microneedling is one of the most evidence-based treatments for acne scarring. It works by breaking up the fibrous scar tissue beneath the skin while stimulating new collagen to fill the depressed areas. Boxcar and rolling scars respond best; icepick scars may require combination with TCA cross chemical reconstruction. Typically 3–6 sessions are needed for significant improvement.
We recommend waiting 24–48 hours before applying makeup. When you do return to makeup, choose mineral/clean formulations for the first week. Foundation and concealer can cover the residual pink tone starting around day 2–3. Avoid non-mineral makeup (especially anything with fragrance or chemical sunscreens) while the skin barrier is healing.
